Congratulations to the 2023-24 Empower Simcoe Gift of the Heart Award Recipients

Empower Simcoe is proud to recognize the outstanding recipients of the 2023-2024 Gift of the Heart Awards.

“The Gift of the Heart Awards recognize extraordinary individuals and organizations who have impacted the lives of the people and families supported by Empower Simcoe and our employees through their exceptional commitment and service,” says Empower Simcoe CEO, Dr. Claudine Cousins.  “We’re so very grateful for their contributions that have been essential in advancing our mission of empowering people to lead a meaningful and inclusive life.”

The 2023-2024 Gift of the Heart recipients were celebrated during Empower Simcoe’s 71st Annual General Meeting on September 11th.

Congratulations to the following honourees:

Volunteer
David Whyne

For his exceptional volunteerism, sharing his musical talent at Empower Simcoe Foundation fundraising events.  David is not just a gifted musician—he is a true multi-instrumentalist, who brings a remarkable range of sounds to life through his passion for music . His performances are always memorable, whether he’s playing at the Empower Simcoe Foundation Golf Tournament, adding a special touch to the annual Celebrating Community Champions Fashion Show, or captivating us all at last year’s 70th anniversary summer celebration party of Empower Simcoe.

Kevin Berry

For promoting collaboration, advocacy and inclusion on behalf of families supported by Empower Simcoe.  Kevin’s dedication and tireless efforts have profoundly impacted not only his daughter but the entire Empower Simcoe community.  As a key member of our agency’s Listening Forum Strategic Planning Committee, Kevin is deeply committed to fostering inclusion and spearheading innovation that improves communication and technology for individuals and families who rely on our services.  His advocacy for individuals who communicate differently has been a crucial reminder of the importance of listening with intention, and making sure every individual feels seen, heard, and understood.

Sharlene Fountain

For her unwavering dedication to inclusion and advocacy for the rights of people of all abilities as a member of the Empower Simcoe Believe In Yourself Committee. Sharlene has proudly represented Empower Simcoe at numerous events, including the annual Community Living Ontario conference. Her steadfast commitment was also evident when she stood alongside Orillia Mayor Don McIsaac to raise the Empower Simcoe flag for Community Living Month at the Orillia Opera House. Not only does Sharlene actively champion authentic inclusion for people of all abilities, but she also generously shares her experiences on Empower Simcoe’s social media platforms, emphasizing the incredible power of self-belief and inclusiveness.

Cortney Moreau

For going above and beyond as an Empower Simcoe Community Support Worker in meeting the wishes, aspirations and goals of Hailey, a person supported by Empower Simcoe. Observing Hailey’s determination inspired Cortney at her own expense and with own resources, to research, design, test and build and adaptive loom device which could support Hailey’s desire to create and participate in her passion for knitting. Thanks to Cortney’s ingenuity, innovation and unwavering commitment to help the people she supports lead a meaningful and inclusive life, Haily is now crushing it one stitch at a time.

Community Partner of the Year, Barrie
Barrie Kempettes Gymnastics Club

For over 15 years, Barrie Kempettes Gymnastics Club has partnered with Empower Simcoe’s Employment Supports and Services program, exemplifying what if means to be a truly inclusive employer.  Thanks to this long-standing collaboration, the Barrie Kempettes Gymnastics Club continues to provide numerous employment opportunities to many individuals who are ready, willing, and able to work, all while making a significant impact in their community.

The Sharing Place Food Centre

For its generous support of Empower Simcoe’s Employment, and Transitions Programs, ensuring people of all abilities can gain life skills and work experience through volunteer work. These essential volunteer positions offer invaluable transferable skills both in daily living tasks as well as meaningful opportunities to gain employment skills. In addition, The Sharing Place Food Centre is collaborating to support Empower Simcoe’s Chef In You, and Job Readiness programs. For the people supported by Empower Simcoe who volunteer at The Sharing Place Food Centre, there’s a vital sense of pride and belonging in knowing they are assisting their community.
