Bringing Literacy Outside

Bringing Literacy Outside

Being in nature not only wakes up children’s senses, it also helps them grow mentally, socially, and emotionally. The outdoors becomes a big classroom where kids can explore, dream up stories, and get inspired by what they see around them. “Research across Canada has documented multiple benefits from outdoor education, including improved learning retention, reduced anxiety, and increased overall well being.” (outdoorplaycanada.ca)

Outdoor literacy activities allow children to mix language with moving and exploring. To keep learning fun at home, try:

 – Creating a puppet show using natural items.
– Labeling animals and tracks you see, bring a magnifying glass or binoculars.
– Acting out stories or setting up a “nature library” with books about plants, animals, and weather.
– Hosting a “storytime picnic” where children enjoy snacks while listening to stories. Bring stuffed animals to the picnic and ask your child to “read” to their animal.

– Creating a garden where each plant is labeled with its name
– Looking in nature to find shapes, letters and numbers. The clouds, leaves, trees, and ground have many hidden treasures.
– Planning a “nature alphabet hunt,” searching for objects that represent each letter of the alphabet.
– Creating a garden where each plant is labeled with its name.
– Making letters, shapes and numbers with sticks and leaves.

Incorporating early literacy activities into outdoor settings offers numerous benefits for young children. By exploring the natural beauty of the Canadian outdoors, children can connect with their environment and culture. The outdoors provides a rich backdrop for learning.

Giving back makes me feel that I’m contributing a little bit to making life better for other people. It’s my small contribution. I want to make life a little bit easier and happier for people, to know they are loved and cared about and are important.
