Empower Simcoe’s CEO, Dr. Claudine Cousins, has taken to the airwaves to shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by organizations providing essential care services across Ontario. In two recent interviews—one with CTV Barrie and the other with CBC Ontario Morning—Dr. Cousins spoke candidly about the unfortunate closure of two of Empower Simcoe’s supported living homes, a decision driven by the growing financial strain due to insufficient provincial funding.
In her discussions, Dr. Cousins emphasized the critical need for increased investment from the Ontario government, citing rising operational costs and the increased complexity of care needs. The closure of these homes affects vulnerable individuals who rely on supported living environments for a safe and stable life. “We’ve done everything we can to keep these homes open, but without additional funding, it became unsustainable,” said Dr. Cousins.
These interviews highlight the broader provincial crisis, where many service providers are struggling to keep up with growing demand for specialized care, all while grappling with stagnant funding. Dr. Cousins’ message is clear: to continue supporting those in need, systemic change and a commitment to long-term funding solutions are required.
Empower Simcoe’s advocacy goes beyond their own organization, speaking for the many communities and service providers across the province who are facing similar challenges.
