Gifts of the Harvest - Learning From the Land
October is a beautiful time to talk about seasonal changes, harvesting, and the relationship Indigenous Peoples have with the land. It connects naturally with children’s curiosity about nature and creates opportunities to explore gratitude, respect, and the many teachings the land has to share.
As the seasons change and the leaves begin to fall, October invites us to slow down, observe, and appreciate the world around us. For many Indigenous Peoples, the land is more than a place we live—it is a teacher, a relative, and a source of knowledge, connection, and teachings passed down through generations. The fall season provides opportunities to learn about the importance of harvesting, gathering, and showing gratitude for the plants, animals, water, and resources that sustain our communities.
Indigenous ways of knowing remind us that we have responsibilities to care for the land and maintain respectful relationships with all living things. Harvesting is not only about collecting food; it is about connection, gratitude, and understanding the relationship between people and the natural world. Seasonal teachings about foods, medicines, and the land continue to be shared through families, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, helping us understand the importance of caring for the Earth and all that it provides.
Here are some ways to explore and connect with the land together:
Go on a nature walk… Find a local trail, park, or green space to explore the changing season together.
Explore seasonal foods and harvesting… Visit a local farmers’ market or grocery store and explore fall foods together.
Make a Three Sisters Soup together Explore the connection between corn, beans, and squash and how these plants represent relationships and working together. Whether it’s taking a walk outside, sharing a meal, or noticing the changes around us, every moment is an opportunity to learn from the land. Together, we can encourage children to explore, appreciate, and care for the world around them.
