Invitation to Participate in Nipissing University Research Study

Seeking voices to help improve support for women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities affected by violence

Empower Simcoe invites participants to take part in a Nipissing University research study focused on improving support services for women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who have experienced abuse, assault, or partner violence. We are currently seeking two groups of participants in Ontario:

1. Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

We would like to hear directly from women with IDD about their experiences with abuse and what kinds of support and services are most helpful.

You can take part if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Live in Ontario
  • Identify as a woman with an intellectual or developmental disability
  • Have experienced abuse, assault, or partner violence

2. Caregivers of Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

We are also looking for caregivers who can share their perspectives on how to better support women with IDD who have faced gender-based violence.

What's involved?

Participants will be invited to join a 90-minute focus group on Zoom, where you can share your experiences and suggestions in a small, supportive setting.
If you are not comfortable joining a group, we can arrange a one-on-one interview instead — we want to make this as accessible and comfortable for you as possible.

As a thank-you, you will receive a $30 Amazon e-gift card for your time.

Important Information
  • Taking part in this study is voluntary, and you can stop at any time.
  • Your participation will not affect any services or supports you currently receive.
  • Everything you share will be kept confidential.
  • This study has been reviewed and approved by the Nipissing University Research Ethics Board (Certificate #NUREB103901), which ensures your rights and privacy are protected.

Giving back makes me feel that I’m contributing a little bit to making life better for other people. It’s my small contribution. I want to make life a little bit easier and happier for people, to know they are loved and cared about and are important.
