Treaties Recognition Week
November 1–7, 2026 is Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario, a time to learn about the agreements known as Treaties that continue to guide our shared relationship with the land and with one another. Every park, playground, trail, and neighbourhood in Simcoe County is located on Indigenous lands and within Treaty territory.
Treaties are living agreements between First Nations and the Crown that continue today. They remind us that we all have a shared responsibility to care for the land, respect one another, and build strong relationships. One simple way to begin learning is by discovering the Treaty territory where you live, work, or play. During your next family walk, take time to notice the trees, animals, water, and changing seasons. Talk with your child about how everyone can help care for the land by leaving nature as they found it, staying on marked trails, and showing kindness to all living things. Small conversations like these help children develop respect for the land and for the people who have cared for it since time immemorial.
