New service model balances permanent supportive living with a streamlined skill-development program.
When Empower Simcoe launched the Journey to Independence program at Laclie in 2024, it was envisioned as a transitional experience:
Two years for individuals not already supported by Empower Simcoe.
One year for those already receiving support.
The goal was to help participants build skills for greater independence using the STEPS to Independence tool.
What We Learned
As the program unfolded, many families and individuals expressed a preference for individualized supports in private units or apartments. This made it challenging to fill all four of the home’s main-floor bedrooms. Rather than simply stay the course, we chose to listen, adapt, and evolve the model to better reflect what people told us they needed.
What’s New at Laclie
Empower Simcoe’s on-site accreditation review is scheduled for October 7–10. During this week, we’ll proudly share how Empower Simcoe lives its mission every day—with quality, compassion, and commitment.
Main floor → Permanent supportive living. The four bedrooms now provide ongoing housing for individuals with mild to moderate developmental disabilities, including those with maladaptive behaviours. This option operates independently of the skill-development stream. (Two residents are currently supported on the main floor.)
Lower level → Focused transition program. The two basement bedrooms remain dedicated to the original Journey to Independence skill-building program, where participants work on independence and life skills in a structured, outcomes-driven environment. (Two internal participants are currently enrolled.)
Why it matters
These updates mean Laclie can now serve two important needs at once:
- Stable housing for people who thrive with permanent, supportive living.
- A dedicated skill-development track for those ready to practice and strengthen independence.
It’s a model that combines flexibility with focus, ensuring the program continues to deliver meaningful outcomes while staying responsive to community needs.
